No one makes a roast like my mum – except my sisters. There’s something about familial flavours that makes a mum-cooked meal taste unlike any other. It could be that “mum’s cooking” doesn’t have any recipes – just a little bit of this, a dash of that; it’s ready when it “looks ready” – and years of perfecting the timing. My mum doesn’t cook much any more but my sisters continue the mealtime traditions. So, when one of them is in town and offers to cook, all other social requests are responded with, “Nah. Sorry. Can’t make it. Dee’s doin’ a lamb roast.”
