The next day, I comment that I haven’t had such a fun night out dancing in 20 years.

I’ve been familiar with Northern Soul – both the heavy-beat, fast-tempo 60s soul music and the Mod-influenced subculture it inspired – since I was a teenager but this was the first time I’d experienced a Northern Soul event.

One of the first things I noticed was the serious style on show – old Mods don’t die, they just become sharper dressers.

And then there was the dancing. Frenzied. Athletic. Uninhibited. Ecstatic. Contagious.

I eventually leave. Exhilarated.

I want more of this Northern Soul madness.
