100happywords: 13. Fibro
I love old fibro beach shacks – the ones that sprang up along the Australian coastline in the mid 20th century. If I can smell the sea, I’m immediately on the lookout for their skillion roofs and two-tone paintwork. They represent days at the beach without a care in the world, as well as a simple, cheap dwelling that’s makes home ownership possible for all. I know their fibrous glass slivers are deadly. I know they’re hot as hell in summer and freezing in winter. I know they are over-represented in the suburbs of marginalised. But I still love fibro.
