I’d signed up for the #100happydays challenge, which involves capturing “happy” moments in a photo a day for 100 days, and was to begin in five days.

Then I saw the birds.

Initially all I saw were a couple of dozen pigeons bobbing around in the grass of the vacant block across from my brother’s house.

As a few of them flew away, my gaze followed them to the power lines above. I was awestruck by the unexpectedness and beauty of the sight. The birds. The angles. The clouds.

In that moment I knew my 100 happy days had begun.
