I first fell in love with Bougainvillea when I was living in a little workers cottage in the middle of West End. The recently renovated house was bare of greenery when we moved in but within 12 months, two glorious Bougainvillea vines had entwined the railings and posts of the front verandah, their purple and red bracts bursting over the footpath. Years later I would curse the vine’s capacity to grow so rapaciously – “I need to cut back the Bougainvillea again” <sigh> – but its ability to make any space a celebration of life and colour has kept me a fan.
