My love affair with utes blossomed only recently. I’ve had to move house several times and due to finances, I’ve chosen the cost-effective borrow-a-ute approach. My first ute experience was my sister’s hulking, dual-cab 4WD. Initially I was intimidated by its size, its clunking clutch and, particularly, its dashboard handbrake. But then over the week of our acquaintance I grew to love its awkwardness; I felt I was wrangling a beast and winning. I adored its practicality. My fear replaced by competence and admiration. Now, I’ll often catch myself staring at passing flat trays, imagining a ute of one’s own.
