It’s great to catch up with old friends – find out what they’re up to, how they’ve changed (or not), share old jokes and stories.

Sometimes they don’t even have to be real people.

I recently caught up with Mouse, Mrs Madrigal, Mary Ann and other “old friends” in the ninth book in Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City series. Maupin began his tales of a found-family of outsiders living in an apartment block in San Francisco in the 1970s. They’ve been through a lot over 40 years but what has been a constant is their indomitable spirit.

Friends indeed.
