The email tells me I’m getting a tax refund. My heart leaps. I usually have to pay tax when I lodge my annual return so this is not only a surprise but also a relief. I start mentally planning how it will be spent: A few essentials? A little on existing debt? Or maybe I could take a holiday? Or buy an iPad? When my refund arrives it is substantially less than expected. The tax office has recalculated my projected tax obligations and I now owe them more money for the current financial year. Sigh. A few essentials it is.
