There seems to be an unwritten rule that fish and chips, purchased within walking distance of water, must be consumed within view of said body of water.

And so it was that I found myself in seaside Scarborough on a Saturday night, a steaming take-away of kumara-chip-topped gourmet fish and chips in hand, seeking a suitable feasting spot.

I’d forgone the sea-view café’s table.

My options – sand between my toes on the moonlit beach or sea glistening through the pines, in the embrace of glowing, gnarled, grand old fig tree?

A table for one under the majestic tree, thanks.
