100happywords: 20. Mad Men
Oh the paradox of life.
Why do I love a television show where the characters live meaningless lives, the men are misogynists and it’s set in the upper-class, consumer-deceiving world of advertising?
Simple. It’s all about design – mid-century modern design.
Mad Men recreates the furniture, fashion and future-sense of the 1950s and ‘60s superbly.
Although I grew up in the ‘70s, my childhood was filled with the clean lines, tailored clothes, funky fabrics and optimism of the mid-century. For me now, these artefacts of another age represent comfort, safety and love.
And yet, I know it wasn’t necessarily so.
